The Jester Winks

"The Jester Winks"
...
The jester winks
With both his eyes
He’d like die
But he’ll joke instead
Better to pass the times
And to save his death
For a better life
One where wise men lead
And fools hide their heads
From the shame of they
Who can discern a lie
Yet the jester winks
With both his eyes
He’d like to cry
But he’ll joke instead
Since he cannot lie
And the fools gnash their teeth
When truth is plainly said

"See How Life Turns Out For You"
Grandma is living in a retirement home for the old
Her family has money but not the means to care for her at home
See how life turns out for you!
Love your mom and father, too!
Grandma eats three meals daily in a room made up of antique chairs
She rarely has appetite and leaves most the food but no one’s ‘ware
See how life turns out for you!
Eat your meat and veggies, too!
Grandma hosts no one except the nurses with cold, pale, dry hands:
They make her bed each morning
They dress her while she’s squirming
They hoist her in her wheelchair
They roll her here, there, everywhere
They change her senior diapers
They bathe her in the shower
They give her pills to swallow
They bed her til tomorrow
Grandma has no (/few) friends at the retirement home for the old
Residents tell her stories in which not a thing (/nothing) is ever told
See how life turns out for you!
Find good friends and keep them, too!
Someday you’ll be old, too!
Someday you’ll be alone, too!
Grandma plays bingo every Wednesday and Sunday after lunch
She always is winning but it never seems to add (/amount) to much
See how life turns out for you!
Practice bingo and rummy, too!
Grandma sits in bed waiting for visitors that never come:
Her eldest is a royal bitch
Her only son’s a narcissist
Her middle is incompetent
Her youngest is a bon vivant
Her nephews are oblivious
Her nieces are ridiculous
Her friends are all sick and bed-rid
Her husband’s dead, good luck for him
Grandma cries for the days when she could live her life all on her own
Recalls the past only fondly and laments the present with a moan
See how life turns out for you!
Care for (your) body and mind, too!
Grandma will die in her retirement home for the old...

The Forest

“The Forest”
Deep within a forest
Where creatures feel by smell
The stink is getting worse
For those who still can tell
But no one yet has found it
The origin of the stench
Some point to the piles of shit
Others point to their heads
Breathe—
The creatures feed
The forest thrives
The creatures fear
The forest dies
A congress called
Each pick a side
Division grows
Discussion dies
The creatures fear
The creatures fight
The smell is in your head, mental static
The answer is quite clear, your manic
Our ways old and dear, democratic
Shall save our forest dear, don’t panic
Those who do not know what shit smells like
Are bound to mistake bullshit alike
The old stands democratically unliked
Clean the forest or the future be like
For who or what speak you, not reason
Your ideas are like a new religion
You’ll shout them ‘til we beg submission
Untold danger is such unreason
Religion is the worship of the old
Which the truths of the present remold
Change is the growth of our dear forest
Hear the swell of the people’s chorus
I hear the howl of the purist
Who yields to no way but fold
Those who pretend at such sureness
Surely grow ignorance bold
Those who pretend at no such sureness
Surely grow ignorance very bold
When you play at such sureness
You grow handsomely bold
The first to the top of mountain sureness
Captures the heart of boldness
Do you see the smoke rising?
A cloud of ambiguous doom?
When it blocks out our sun’s light
Our forest will be a tomb
Deep within a forest
Where creatures play with fire
The smoke is growing thicker
For those who still respire
The Congress adjourns to search into the forest
They find a clearing just where it burns hottest
Discover their kids, deranged and malnourished
Burning trees, dancing, singing in chorus
Breathe—
The forest burns
Its smoke is light
Its smell is sweet
We feel alright
Down with the old
Up with the fight
The forest we clear
One tree at a time
Let others grow change
We’ll clear the site
The forest it burns
Its smoke is our light

Closer

"Closer"
Time and being, seem to be, in conspiracy
Dividing, subdividing, us and them, each to each
Separate lives, our demise, never you and me
Draw closer to ...
Idle talk, common stock, loss of bodied speech
Hidden thoughts, fumbled shots, a weakness in our reach
Arguments, spiteful vents, the laying of our siege
Draw closer to ...
I don’t know you
I don’t know you anymore
I don’t know you
I don’t know you anymore
Further and further
Each alone we grow
Silence thick as bone
Cooled on past the fervor
Time exacts its toll
From who we once were
Half attempts, life events, no one takes the lead
Pictures shared, comments left, is this what friendship means?
I follow what you follow and pretend that we’re agreed
Draw closer to ...
I saw you coming down the street, but nothing had to say
We smiled and we nodded in that insubstantial way
Then turned the corner, found the words my actions just betrayed
Draw closer to ...
I don’t know you
I don’t know you anymore
I don’t know you
I don’t know you anymore
Further and further
Each alone we grow
Silence thick as bone
Cooled (on) past the fervor
Time exacts its toll
From who we once were

Favorite New Band

“Favorite New Band”
They’ve got that brand-new sound
They’ve got that sound that’s in demand
They’ve got that sound that’s goin’ round
And they’re your favorite new band
There’s so much music out there today
So many bands sound the same,
Sometimes it’s hard to keep ‘em straight
But this band is so much different than those other bands
They’re really different
And different in a different way
They’ve got that brand-new sound
They’ve got that sound that’s in demand
They’ve got that sound that’s goin’ round
And they’re your favorite new band
Every hour of every day, their same two hits get played and played,
From New York City to west L.A.
All the girls, they wanna see ‘em
All the boys, they wanna be ‘em
Their sound is hip and oh-so dashing
And so damn catchy...
Their sound goes round and round your head til you feel your brain start cracking—
They’ve got that brand-new sound
They’ve got that sound that’s in demand
They’ve got that sound that’s goin’ round
And they’re your favorite new band
They got that sound
That sound!
Sound!
Sound!

Leviathan

“Leviathan”
Sisters, brothers
Listen to us
We will make it right
We’ll make a difference
Give us your vote
Give us your voice
Give us your taxes
We’ll lead the fight
We’ll give you rights
We’ll be your Leviathan
You’ll be content
At least at the end
There’ll be no violence
The time for a change is right now
Right now is the time for a change
Right now is always the time
The time has always been right now
Sisters, brothers
Don’t listen to them
We know what you need
You need — to trust your friends!
They are the bad
They’ll make you sad
They are the tyrants
They’ll let you down
Under the ground
They want you silenced
We want you strong
Under our arm
Just like a giant
We only tell you the truth
The truth is all that we tell you
The truth is always from us
We’ve always told you the truth
Peace and prosperity — yes
One in solidarity — yes
This is our wholesome dream — yes
It’s as good as it seems — promise!
Come now and follow us there
We will be fair, we swear
We know what’s best for you
We know because we have heard you
Your voice resounds in us
We are your voice, you can trust us
You can trust us
We promise

"Mr. Green Begs a Question"
Dear Mr. Green,
We’ve received your letter
But, with sympathy,
Your matter is far from settled
—For you must now petition
The state to solve your question
In matters like these,
Local municipalities
Are beholden by bureaucracy
And limited cognitive powers
—Higher you must go, sir
To a state representative you don’t know, sir
And there petition redress
Of the question you ask
In the hope of satisfaction
On your philosophical quest—
We wish you all the best!
Dear Mr. Green,
You were misled, my apologies
The state has long
Relinquished its authority
On questions relating to autonomy
Higher still
You must contact the federal
Agency of Human Affairs
Which handles such heady cares
As these...
Respectfully yours ... Representative Coxcomb
Dear Mr. Green,
We’ve received your letter
And though it’s laughably naïve
We admire your sincerity, sir.
The question you pose is one we’ve received before
Now and again
But usually the senders get their answers long before
Their letters reach our desk
Free?
Is man free?
He to whom you pose the question
Is bound to give his own
Determined answer
So as you’ve asked your gov’t, your gov’t
Answers in kind
Within the limits of law here, enfranchised
Man is free to do what he likes
But if I may step from my designated role
To ask a question of my own...
Do you really believe that it’s
Merely a matter of law
For you to be free?

What If

"What If"
What if I’m mistaken in my thinking?
What if I am blind to my blindness?
What if I’m a product, not an agent?
What I don’t know myself?
What if I’m becoming like the people I disdain?
What if all my thoughts and all actions are in vain?
What if I’ve got nothing to offer
What if ... I’m deluded in my dreaming?
What if ... I’m a coward, never tested?
What if I don’t want to know myself?
What if I’m becoming like the people I disdain?
What if all my thoughts and all actions are in vain?
